How the Program works:
1. Children aged 3 and older can register.
2. Come to the library & fill out a form with your name, address, phone number, grade and school. You'll receive a  reading log to record titles of books you read this summer.
3. We'll be offering a variety of programs, craft days and contests all summer. A list of events will be in your packet-join us as often as possible.
4. Prizes are awarded for reaching the different levels of reading. Everyone who completes the program  will be awarded a 2008 Summer Reading certificate.

Monday, June 2 – Kick Off Day

Come sign up for summer reading anytime between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. -- Scholastic Book Fair; Held in the library activity room

1– 3 p.m. -- Join the Bug Carnival in the library parking lot.  We’ll have face painting, bug balloons, popcorn, music and crafts.  We’ll be signing up for summer reading outside during this time too!

Monday, June 2 – Friday, June 6th – Build-a-Bug

Pick up your bag of bug parts anytime during the first week of summer reading.

The rules are simple:  Use as many parts as you wish from the bag and add up to 3 things of your own from home.  Painting, coloring and markers are allowed.  Your creation MUST resemble a bug, whether something real or something you have imagined.  Return your bug to the library NO LATER than June 30th!

Bugs will be displayed at the library through July 31st.

Tuesday, June 10 – 1 p.m.

Local Bee Keeper Lex Geislar will be here to talk about bee keeping.  He’ll bring some of the tools and gadgets that he uses for collection and care of his bees.  We’ll learn why bee keeping is important and how it can be done safely.  Participate in making a paper bee hive.

People 8 and older are invited to attend this program.

Monday, June 16 – 2 p.m.

Topeka Zoo’s Creepy Crawlies program.  Come learn all about different bugs, where they live and what they eat.  You’ll have the opportunity to see and even touch some live bugs!

Held at Elliot Hall – First Baptist Church 410 S. Hickory

ALL ages are welcome to attend!

Friday, June 20—1-3 p.m.

Have you ever wished you knew how to write computer code to make a game, cartoon or movie? SCRATCH is all the rage and we want to teach you how it works!!  SCRATCH teaches you all the basics and allows you to be creative.  We’ll have a demo and then use the computers for hands-on learning.  Bring a flash drive if you have one to save your creations.

Registration required; space is limited.

Program for ages 11 and up!

Monday, June 23 – 2 p.m.

No Sew Bandana Purse Class.  Come learn how to make one of these funky fresh new bags.  You’ll learn the basics and get to make a purse that’s perfect for a trip to the pool or for a sleepover with friends.

Program for teens 12 – 19 only!

Thursday, June 26 – 1– 3 p.m.

We’ve got our new video game systems and we want you to be the first ones to use them!  We’ll have a variety of games to play.  Bring your friends, come hang out for a few hours and enjoy the time to play without your parents telling you to turn it off!

Tuesday, July 1 – 6 p.m.

Arbonne Consultant Ericka Hart will be here to tell us all the latest and greatest trends in skin care and make-up.  Wear a clean face and bring skin care or make-up questions or concerns you would like to discuss.  Moms bring your daughters or girls come with your friends.  We’ll provide snacks, too!

Registration required, cost $1.00

Monday, July 7– 2 p.m.

Buggies with a Beat with Bongo Barry.  During this interactive program, Bongo Barry with help the audience explore the world of bugs through music, rhythm and lots of fun!  He will bring his treasure chest of musical instruments for all to play!

Come for another day of gaming fun!  We’ll have our new systems out again ready for action.  We’ll provide snacks and games, you bring your friends.

For teens 12-19 only!

Monday, July 21 – 1 p.m.

Our local Orkin “bug man” will be here to tell us all about bugs.  Learn with fun hands on demonstrations and games why bugs are important and ways you can help keep them out of your house.

People ages 6 and older are invited to attend.

Saturday, July 26 – 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

3rd annual Summer Reading Pool Party!  Children receiving a Lucky Ladybug pool pass are invited to attend our end of the summer party at Forest Park Pool.  Children who earn the Lucky Ladybug will be the ONLY ONES allowed to attend the party.  Each child is allowed to bring his/her parents or legal guardians only!  No other family members will be allowed to attend unless they too have earned the Lucky Ladybug as part of the summer reading program.  We’ll serve refreshments and lifeguards will be on duty as normal.

Buggy Movie Days – Wednesday June 11 & Wednesday July 2 @ 9:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m.

All movies will be family friendly and shown on the BIG SCREEN in the City Hall Commission Room.

Each session is limited to 65 participants.  Tickets for the movie will be available 2 weeks prior to the show.  Movie days are free and movies shown will be BUG themed!  We’ll serve popcorn and drinks too!

ALL ages welcome; children 5 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult.

 

Summer Reading Craft Days

Come any time between 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. to complete a creepy crawly craft.

Craft Days ($1.00 per participant, per day)

June 4 – Bug Boxes – Make your our bug box to house the critters you catch.  We’ll decorate them and show you how to use them to keep your critters safe.

June 18 – Reverse Tie Dye – Tie Dye is back, but we’re trying something new!  Bring a colored t-shirt and we’ll wash some of the color away to give it a tie dyed look!

July 9 – Bug Flingers – Fantastic foam bug flingers - We’ll make them look like bugs then you can take it home and launch it around the yard.

July 23 – Buggy Snacks—Learn how to make 3 different snacks with serious bug likeness!  We’ll give you copies of the recipes too!
